Gordon Racing is a family-run training yard here in Winchester, with a solid track record of turning out some genuinely high-profile stable stars over the years. With a commitment to putting horses first, they’ve gained a lot of support in the community, but are always looking for ways to reach even more people. So, back in August, they threw their gates open to 250 visitors for an open day and honestly, it’s still the hot topic of conversation around the Hog Roast Winchester office.
When the client first got in touch we walked them through the menu options and threw in a few suggestions based on what they were picturing before pretty quickly landing on a traditional hog roast with some solid sides to match. Since guests would be moving around all day, easy-to-eat food made the most sense, so we suggested serving everything on disposable bamboo plates with matching cutlery, giving people full freedom to wander and eat wherever suited them.
By the time we rolled up to Morestead farm stables on the day of the event, we were more than ready to go. And like a horse bolting out the starting gate (sorry, couldn’t resist), Hog Roast
Winchester got stuck into preparing a whole hog roast, complete with stuffing, crackling and applesauce, alongside a colourful tomato and mozzarella salad, mixed salad, coleslaw and a mix of sweet potato and classic fries. With a properly tasty meat-free option thrown in too, there was genuinely something for everyone, whatever they fancied.
Guests seemed to really enjoy eating at their own pace, and just as we’d hoped, the disposable plates gave the whole event a nice, relaxed, help-yourself kind of energy. People felt comfortable wandering off to explore the stables between bites, which is exactly the vibe you want at something like this.
All in all, it was a brilliant day and Gordon Racing couldn’t have been happier with how smoothly everything ran. Hog Roast Winchester was proud to be part of it and we’re keeping our fingers crossed that we’ll be called back for the next one.
